Bathtub Installation & Drain Repair Specialists | Serving the GTA For 20+ Years

Outwardly, bathtub jobs seem easy to do. Remove old tub, replace with new tub. Done.

The actual work will be to what’s happening to the bathroom plumbing below. The location of the drain, the waste and overflow connection, the location of the supply line and the condition of the subfloor after the old tub is removed. Any new tub installation, if not done considering all those factors, is a call back waiting to happen.

For more than 20 years BOS Plumbing and Drains has handled bathtub installation throughout the GTA and surrounding areas. We do the job right because we have seen what happens when it’s not done right.

What We Handle: Bathtub Installation, Replacement, And Drain Work

New Bathtub Installation

New bathtub installations fall into two categories: one is a bathroom that has never had a bathtub installed and the other is a bathroom that will have a completely new bathtub installed in an existing bathroom.

When installing for the first time, we install the rough-in plumbing  drain, waste, overflow and supply lines to proper placement before tiling or installing backer board. The success of the bathroom over 20 years will depend on the rough-in.

For a bathroom tub installation replacing an existing unit, we will evaluate your existing rough-in location before suggesting your tub options. There are various rough-in types and not all of them will fit all tubs. Moving pipe is an expensive process: A left-hand drain unit will not fit into a right-hand drain rough-in. We’re about to let you know ahead of time that before you purchase a tub, we have this advice for you.

Replacing Bathtub Drain And Drain Assembly

One of the most frequently performed stand alone tub projects we perform is replacing the bathtub drain. Older drains rust, crack or eat away at the crosspiece. The mechanism which stops the slide doesn’t work. The overflow plate has a leak at the overflow gasket.

Properly changing bathtub drain components involves removing the drain’s crosspiece and stopper, cleaning the old plumber’s putty from the drain flange, then installing the new drain with the proper amount of thread engagement and a new plumber’s putty seal. If it is done incorrectly, a slow drip will be directed down into the subfloor, and that problem will not be apparent for several months.

Replacing a bathtub drain pipe is a more complicated task when the drain shoe, P-trap or the waste and overflow assembly has to be replaced. Older Hamilton and Etobicoke house drains use corroded cast iron or galvanized connections which are past their “useful life. Not only do we replace the visible components of the waste and overflow system, but the entire system.

Bathtub Drain Clog Clearing

A bathtub drain clogged with hair and soap scum is common. However, if a tub doesn’t drain even after its drain screen is cleaned, there is likely a clog farther down the drain, past the P-trap.

We have the correct machine to remove a bathtub clog from a clogged drain, a hand snake if the drain camera or probing shows only some hair is to blame, or a sectional machine if there is more debris in the drain. Sometimes the slow drain is not the drain line, but rather a partially clogged vent stack, which is a common problem in older homes; if that is the case, we know it’s that problem, not some snake issue.

Walk-In Shower Conversion

Walk-in shower installation in place of an existing tub is a popular request across the GTA, particularly in primary bathrooms where the tub isn’t getting used and the space could work better as a larger shower.

Plumbing side of a walk-in shower install includes capping / relocating the existing tub drain rough-in, installing a new shower drain at correct position and depth, waterproofing the pan area prior to the installation of tile and verifying the supply and valve rough-in location is correct for the shower design.

The plumbing is installed during the conversion. When your bathroom renovation company is doing both tile and waterproofing, we plan the extent and sequence of the project with them. If you need us to take care of the entire treatment, we do that as well.

What Actually Affects Bathtub Installation Cost

When it comes to installing a bathtub, the bathtub installation cost is always a topic that arises in nearly every discussion. Well, we’ll see when we pull the old tub.

There are two parts of the new bathtub installation cost. The first one is the fixture itself: acrylic, cast iron, free standing, alcove, drop-in. There is a wide variation in price within those categories. The second is labour and where the existing rough-in and subfloor is – the higher the activity there, the more expensive the labour.

The bottom end will be a simple replacement where the new tub drain matches the rough-in, the subfloor is not compromised, and the supply valves can be easily accessed. A job in which we discover a soft subfloor after 40 years of a leaking drain gasket with the waste and overflow in need of replacement, and supply shut-offs that haven’t moved in 40 years, is a different story.

After seeing what we are working with we quote. The quote includes all the items and there will be no line items listed later on.

A Note On Bath Fitter And Similar Overlay Systems

When people look for bath fitters near me, or they’re comparing the bath fitter cost to the overlay option, they’re typically balancing these two choices. Overlay systems do not remove anything but put a liner of acrylic over the existing tub and surround.

BOS installs both. Overlay or replacement will depend on what is below the condition. An overlay will not correct any of these problems if the drain is leaking, the overflow gasket is leaking or there is softness in the back of the drain wall. We will not tell you what works best for us and what works best for you – what works for you is what works for you!

Bathtub Types And What Each One Requires From A Plumber

When installing a tub, it is important to know the tub type before the rough-in is installed.

The standard Alcove tubs fit in your tub and drain to the left or right. The position of the drain in the floor must align with the position of the tub’s drain (left or right end of the tub).

Drop-in and undermount tubs require a deck or platform to be constructed to fit the tub prior to installation. Drain and overflow connections must still be able to be accessed from below or through a panel and, if the drain is on an upper floor, location of access panel is important.

A floor supply connection and freestanding drain assembly are necessary for freestanding tubs. In cases where you already have wall-mounted supply lines, they will need to be moved prior to installing a freestanding unit.

A walk-in tub is a tub with an inward swinging door that allows for the positioning of the drain for quick and easy draining after a bath. Flow rate of the drains is checked and set to the manufacturer’s specification prior to setting.

There are different rough-in requirements for each type. This is what ensures the installation runs smoothly before the tub’s arrival.

Bathtub Installation And Drain Service Across The GTA

The 20+ years of experience we have in this area allows us to be familiar with the conditions in each city that we serve.

Cast iron drain assemblies are very common plumber problems in Hamilton with older homes. In older residences in Hamilton, the cast iron drain assemblies are corroded beyond service. When it’s time to replace a bathtub drain pipe in a 1960s Hamilton home, it often involves replacing an entire cast iron waste and overflow with PVC, which involves cutting into the floor or accessing through the ceiling underneath.

Mississauga Plumbers service a wide variety of homes and tub styles from original alcove tubs in 1970s built homes to custom freestanding tubs installed in renovated Lakeview homes. It’s different in each instance, and we work that way.

In the south end of town, there’s a lot of tub swaps taking place as plumbers replace old tubs that are being renovated. Regularly work with renovation contractors to coordinate rough timing and specifications.

Whether it’s new home construction or existing residences, plumbers in Milton and plumbers in Cambridge have to work with expanding communities that are placing regular calls to install bathtubs.
